We are asking all residents of Spring Hill to participate in Earth Hour this year. Now you are probably asking what is Earth Hour? On March 29, 2008 at 8 p.m. we are asking all residents and businesses to turn off their excess lights for a one hour period (8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.). The purpose of the hour period is to help take action on global warming. And remember it is smart to turn off unnecessary lighting and appliances when not in use. If you would like to read more about earth hour, go to EarthHour.org.
It started with a question: How can we inspire people to take action on climate change? The answer: Ask the people of Sydney, Australia to turn off their lights for one hour.
On March 31, 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 businesses in Sydney turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. This massive collective effort reduced Sydney's energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for a year. This year, more than a dozen cities worldwide will be taking part in this hour-long event.
On March 29th, let’s show the world that our neighborhood cares about this planet we call home. Sometimes, making a difference can really be as simple as just flipping a switch.
